Frequently Asked Questions
- What is talking therapy?
Talking therapy is a relationship between two people (or more than two people in the context of couples counselling and group counselling). This relationship is very different to other relationships you might have with friends and family, because the relationship is about you and your needs. The aim of counselling is to help you deal and overcome issues that are causing emotional distress by working together in a safe and empathic environment. As you begin to face these issues in therapy you will hopefully gain new insight and clarity that can help you to move on or accept situations differently. Sometimes this can be a challenging process, and you may not notice any changes for several sessions. However, with a firm commitment you are more likely to benefit from therapy.
- What are all the different types of talking therapy?
There are many different types of talking therapies and to explain them all would take a long time and have limited use here; to gain a better understanding of the types of talking therapy and how they differ from each other, please visit this link: http://www.counselling-directory.org.uk/counselling.html
- What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)?
CBT differs from some other talking therapies because it tends to focus on solving current difficulties and setting goals to reduce symptoms in the “here and now” rather than looking to the past causes of distress. CBT looks at how your thoughts affect your feelings and behaviour, and helps you manage your thoughts, feelings and behaviours so you can reduce the difficulties you are facing.
- What is Integrative Therapy?
Integrative counsellors and psychotherapists believe that there is no single approach that will be useful for everyone is all circumstances. As a result, Integrative therapy is a combined approach that brings together elements of a variety of therapies, grounded in a relationship of empathy, openness and unconditional positive regard for the client. For example, an Integrative counsellor or psychotherapist may be trained in Person Centred Therapy, Psychoanalysis and Cognitive Behavioural therapies and may use all or some of these therapies with different clients based on the clients need.
- What is Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)?
EMDR is a form of therapy that can be very effective for people suffering with trauma. People who are suffering with trauma (such as after a car accident or suffering from abuse) may experience their memories coming back to them in their daily life with the same intensity of emotion that they felt at the time of the traumatic event. This can often be through flash backs or nightmares, but trauma can also manifest in a variety of different ways.
Although EMDR does not removed these memories, EMDR can help process these memories so they are less emotionally distressing.
- What is couples counselling?
Like one-to-one therapy, couples counselling can be based on a variety of different approaches. However, in general couples counselling is a therapy that helps two people in a romantic relationship resolve difficulties in their relationship.
- Which type of therapy is right for me?
Unfortunately, this is not an easy question to answer. It may be that a lot of people will benefit from a lot of different approaches to counselling. Often, the most important thing is the relationship between you and your therapist, and whether you feel safe to talk to them.
If you are unsure, our advice is to have a look at the Practitioners page and find a therapist you would like to talk to. We are all happy to talk to you about your needs.
