Gemma Ridge is an Integrative Psychotherapist who specialises in Domestic Abuse. She is a Director of HealthWise Leeds Therapy Centre and works for PAC-UK, a charity that supports people affected by adoption. At PAK-UK, Gemma mainly works with birth mothers who are victims of domestic abuse and who have lost their children as a direct result. Gemma also worked as a probation officer for twelve years where she delivered 1-to-1 and group work interventions to perpetrators of domestic abuse. She was trained by the Home Office to deliver accredited Domestic Abuse interventions and training.
There are different types of domestic abuse, including emotional, psychological, physical, sexual and financial abuse. Many abusers behave in ways that include more than one type of domestic abuse, and the boundaries between some of these behaviours are often quite blurred. This often means it is difficult to work out what constitutes abusive behaviour, and what does not. This can bring up many challenges for the therapist in the counselling room.
Benefits of attending?
- Develop a deeper understanding and awareness of domestic abuse
- Explore the impact of domestic abuse on victims
- Explore some of the perspectives of perpetrators of domestic abuse
- Explore ways of working safely and therapeutically with domestically abusive clients
